Campbell’s playmaking is helpful in No. 11 UCLA’s win over Washington

Campbell spread the ball well for the Bruins while they dominated the Huskies.

LOS ANGELES — The No. 11 UCLA Bruins can win games in many different ways.

They usually succeed when Tyger Campbell displays his playmaking talents, David Singleton rains in three-pointers, or Adem Bona dominates the paint, to name a few.

Against the Washington Huskies, the Bruins did it alll, employing a balanced effort en route to a 74-49 victory.

Campbell led them by facilitating their offense. He also scored on all three levels but was particularly effective from beyond the arc, where he knocked in four three-pointers.

Campbell ended with 15 points and 11 assists.

Much of his facilitation ended up in the hands of Bona, who cashed in on alley-oops and layups shots around the basket.  After a forgettable game two days ago against the Washington State Cougars, where big man, Mouhamed Gueye, grabbed 18 rebounds, Bona returned to form. He was stout defensively, contesting many of the Huskies’ shots inside the paint.

“I did well today on both ends,” Bona said. “I tried my best to help the team win, taking charges and blocking shots. I think I tried my best for us to win.”

He scored 18 points and blocked three shots.

Despite the overall success, the shots were not falling early for the Bruins.

Notably, with around one minute left in the first half, the Huskies were mounting a comeback after falling behind 14. They trailed by just five points as their home crowd cheered them on. That was before Singleton knocked in a deep three-pointer. Campbell followed with another three, leading the Bruins into halftime with a nine-point lead.

Singleton started for the second straight game because Amari Bailey did not play as he is dealing with a foot injury.  Following a 14-point outing against the Washington State Cougars, the usual sixth-man made the extended minutes count by sparking the Bruins’ offense. Singleton even scored at the basket, which is uncharacteristic of him.

He finished with 14 points, six of which came from three-point makes in 35 minutes of play.

Jaquez also chipped in with 17 points and seven rebounds. He made three three-pointers which is uncommon for him.

“I was just happy I made my threes,” he said. “Getting in the gym, working on it, so I was really happy I went 3-for-5 tonight. That was my probably my proudest moment.”

Additionally, Mac Etienne did well with the minutes he was given, ending with four points in four minutes.

Jaylen Clark was one of the only Bruins players who were not effective. The team’s second-highest scorer on the season missed eight of his nine shots and only scored two points.

The win concludes an undefeated two-game road trip in the state of Washington and improves the Bruins’ overall record to 13-2. Next, they play their crosstown rivals, the USC Trojans, at home on Thursday.
