Rafael Nadal (hip) pulls out of Indian Wells, Miami

World No. 8 Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from two upcoming tournaments due to a lingering hip issue.

The 36-year-old Spaniard’s left hip flexor injury will keep him out of the BNP Paribas Open (starts March 5) at Indian Wells, Calif., and the Miami Open (March 19).

“I am sad that I won’t be able to compete at Indian Wells nor Miami,” Nadal posted Tuesday on Twitter. “Very sad not to be there. I’ll miss my US fans but I hope to see them later this year during the summer swing.”

Nadal shares the men’s record with 22 Grand Slam singles titles with Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

He is a three-time winner at Indian Wells (2007, 2009, 2013) and a five-time runner-up in Miami.

Nadal injured his hip flexor during a second-round loss to American Mackenzie McDonald at the Australian Open in January.
