Bo Bichette hit three home runs and drove in five runs to propel the visiting Toronto Blue Jays to an 8-4 victory in the second game of their doubleheader sweep of the Baltimore Orioles on Monday.
Bichette launched a three-run homer in the third inning and solo shots in both the sixth and seventh. The shortstop has 21 homers this year. In the ninth inning, he lined out to center field in his final at-bat.
Cavan Biggio also homered in the sixth inning as the Blue Jays stretched their winning streak to five games. The Orioles have lost three in a row.
Blue Jays starter Jose Berrios (10-5) gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits in six-plus innings. Keegan Akin (3-2) yielded two runs in 2 1/3 innings for Baltimore, which got solo homers from Rougned Odor and Adley Rutschman.
Blue Jays 7, Orioles 3 (Game 1)
Kevin Gausman pitched 6 2/3 strong innings to help visiting Toronto to a victory over Baltimore in the opener of a doubleheader.
Teoscar Hernandez hit his 20th home run of the season for the Blue Jays, who racked up 14 hits. Gausman (11-9) gave up two runs on seven hits without a walk. He struck out six.
Orioles starter Mike Baumann (1-3) lasted five innings, giving up three runs on eight hits in his first major league start since mid-June. Anthony Santander hit a pair of solo home runs for Baltimore.
Yankees 5, Twins 2
Aaron Judge hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth inning, his major-league-leading 54th long ball on the season, and New York beat visiting Minnesota.
The Yankees won their fifth straight home game thanks to Judge, who accounted for three runs and homered in a third straight game for the ninth time in his career. New York was playing its first game since a 4-6 road trip.
Judge snapped a 2-2 tie when he sent a 3-1 slider from Trevor Megill (3-2) into the second deck in left.
Angels 10, Tigers 0
Shohei Ohtani homered twice, Mike Trout finished a triple shy of the cycle and Jose Suarez threw seven scoreless innings in Los Angeles’ rout of Detroit in Anaheim, Calif.
The Angels’ starting 2-3-4 hitters combined to go 10-for-14 with three homers, two doubles, a triple, five RBIs and eight runs. Suarez (6-6) allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out seven.
The highlight of the game for the Tigers came in the eighth inning when outfielder Kody Clemens, son of Roger Clemens, entered the game to pitch and struck out Ohtani looking at a breaking ball that registered 68 mph on the radar gun.
Giants 7, Dodgers 4
Lewis Brinson led a five-homer barrage with a pair of blasts as visiting San Francisco ran its winning streak to four games with a victory over Los Angeles.
J.D. Davis, Thairo Estrada and David Villar also homered for the Giants, who beat the Dodgers for just the fourth time in 14 meetings this season. Logan Webb (12-8) yielded three runs, two earned in six innings, and Camilo Doval tossed a scoreless ninth for his 20th save.
Freddie Freeman and Austin Barnes hit homers for the Dodgers, but it wasn’t enough to deny the Giants a win against their rivals after eight consecutive head-to-head defeats.
Guardians 6, Royals 5 (10 innings)
Oscar Gonzalez hit a two-run, 10th-inning double to lead Cleveland to a victory over host Kansas City, ending a five-game losing streak.
Eli Morgan (5-3) earned the victory with one inning of scoreless relief. Emmanuel Clase picked up his 31st save despite allowing a run in the bottom of the 10th.
Carlos Hernandez (0-5) allowed both runs in the top of the 10th, one earned, as the Royals’ two-game winning streak was snapped.
Astros 1, Rangers 0
Hunter Brown threw six shutout innings in his major league debut and Houston sent the visiting Texas to its ninth consecutive loss.
Brown (1-0) allowed three hits and one walk while striking out five. Bryan Abreu, Hector Neris and Rafael Montero preserved the win by combining for three perfect innings, with Montero earning his 12th save.
The Astros got the only run they needed with a two-out rally in the second inning. Trey Mancini worked a walk against Martin Perez (10-6), moved to second on Chas McCormick’s infield single and came home on Martin Maldonado’s single to left field.
Brewers 6, Rockies 4
Victor Caratini belted a three-run homer as Milwaukee overcame an early deficit to beat Colorado in Denver.
Rowdy Tellez and Andrew McCutchen had two hits for the Brewers. Adrian Houser (5-9) allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits in five innings and Devin Williams got the final four outs for his 10th save.
C.J. Cron homered and Charlie Blackmon had two hits for Colorado, which jumped on Houser for a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Ryan Feltner (2-7) gave up four runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Rays 4, Red Sox 3
David Peralta doubled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as Tampa Bay opened a three-game series by rallying past Boston in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Manuel Margot and Peralta each had two hits for the Rays, who won for the sixth time in their last seven games.
Alex Verdugo had a home run among his two hits for the Red Sox, while Rafael Devers reached base three times as Boston saw its five-game winning streak come to end.
Nationals 6, Cardinals 0
Anibal Sanchez, Hunter Harvey and Mason Thompson combined for a three-hitter as visiting Washington blanked St. Louis.
Sanchez (2-5) held the Cardinals to two hits and two walks in five innings. Harvey retired the Cardinals in order in the sixth inning, and Thompson allowed one hit in three innings to earn his first save.
CJ Abrams went 4-for-5 with two runs and Lane Thomas drove in two runs for the Nationals, who won for the fifth time in six games. St. Louis’ Jack Flaherty (0-1) lost despite yielding only one run on six hits in five innings.
White Sox 3, Mariners 2
Lance Lynn pitched seven strong innings and struck out a season-high 11 batters as Chicago snapped host Seattle’s seven-game winning streak.
AJ Pollock and Elvis Andrus homered for the White Sox, who earned their fifth victory in six games. Chicago is 5-2 without manager Tony La Russa, who is away from the team due to health issues.
Lynn (5-5) allowed one unearned run on three hits and one walk. The veteran retired the final 17 batters he faced. Mariners starter Marco Gonzales (10-13) also went seven innings and allowed three runs on four hits.
Diamondbacks 5, Padres 0
Ryne Nelson held the Padres scoreless over seven innings in his major league debut and Stone Garrett had a double and solo homer as visiting Arizona defeated San Diego.
The surging Diamondbacks, who scored their first four runs with two outs, have won nine of their last 11 games.
Nelson, a 24-year-old right-hander, was the Diamondbacks’ second-round pick in the 2019 draft. He limited the Padres to four hits and no walks with seven strikeouts.
