The Chargers had a short injury report for the week, but it included a big name being doubtful for Monday night’s game against the Denver Broncos.

Receiver Keenan Allen has been dealing with a nagging hamstring injury since the second quarter of the week one matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders. He is doubtful heading into Monday’s game.

“He’s playing in pads and has been able to get a lot more full-speed, high-speed yards,” Chargers coach Brandon Staley said. “The load has increased, and so has the explosiveness of that load. Getting closer. Day-to-day. It’s been good to have him out there at practice.”

Allen told ESPN on Friday that he is aiming for next Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks to return from the hamstring injury that has kept him out for four games going toward five.

The Chargers will call upon 2021 third-round pick Joshua Palmer to step up.

“When a guy goes out, you don’t want anyone to feel like they have to do more than just what they always do,” Staley said. “How they get deployed in a gameplan may be a little bit different, but make sure that you play your game and keep improving. We feel like he is a really quality player. He just needs to play fast, be aggressive.”

The other player on the injury report is right tackle Trey Pipkins. He is suffering from a knee injury he sustained last weekend against the Cleveland Browns. He was limited all week during practice.

“Not to this point. He has handled it well,” Staley said. “He’s sore and stuff like that, but we fully anticipate him to play, barring a setback between now and then.”

Chargers center Corey Linsley missed Saturday’s practice with what Staley called an illness that is just a “24-hour thing.” So, he should be good to go for Monday.

Kicker Dustin Hopkins last weekend due to a right quad injury, but Staley said he will be ready for Monday.

Lastly, Staley and defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill decided to start Alohi Gilman at safety and give Nasir Adderley the third safety role. Gilman came away with a crucial interception to help them win the game.

Staley is playing his cards close to the chest on who will start on Monday between them.

“It’s played out well,” Staley said. “It’s good for our football team. Nas [Adderley] has responded, as we knew he would, and so has Alohi [Gilman]. We know that we have two quality safeties. You guys will know, at the game, how it plays out.”
