Breach win second straight match to open Major III qualifying

The Boston Breach won their second match in as many days by beating the London Royal Ravens on Saturday to open qualifying for the Call of Duty League’s Major III.

The Breach (2-0) won their match 3-2. Three teams playing their first match in the qualifying stage also posted wins: the Atlanta FaZe, OpTic Texas and Seattle Surge.

Major III, which will include all 12 Call of Duty League teams, will be hosted by OpTic Texas March 9-12 in Arlington, Texas. Qualifying for tournament weekend runs through March 5.

Boston and the Ravens (0-1) traded map wins, as the Breach opened with a 250-248 win on Breenbergh Hotel Hardpoint before London responded with a 6-2 triumph on Breenbergh Hotel Search & Destroy. The Breach again moved in front with a 3-0 victory on El Asilo Control, only to see the Ravens again tie the match with a 250-184 win on Mercado Las Almas Hardpoint.

On the clinching fifth map, Embassy Search & Destroy, Boston won 6-2. Ben “Beans” McMellon of Great Britain led the Breach with 74 kills and a kills-deaths ratio of plus-1.32. Byron “Nastie” Plumridge, also of Great Britain, paced the Ravens with 73 kills and a K-D ratio of plus-1.18.

The FaZe (1-0) pulled off a sweep of the Florida Mutineers (0-1). They won 250-176 on Embassy Hardpoint, 6-1 on El Asilo Search & Destroy and 3-0 on El Asilo Control. Austin “SlasheR” Liddicoat of Atlanta’s all-U.S. lineup posted 52 kills and a K-D ratio of plus-1.68, while Tyler “Felo” Johnson led the Mutineers, also all Americans, with 36 kills. No Florida players had a positive K-D ratio.

The Surge (1-0) also won in a sweep, keeping the Minnesota Rokkr (0-2) winless in two matches. Seattle opened with a 250-240 victory on Zarqwa Hydroelectric Hardpoint, followed with a 6-1 win on Breenbergh Hotel Search & Destroy and clinched 3-0 on Al Bagra Fortress Control. Amer “Pred” Zulbeari of Australia led the Surge with 54 kills and a plus-1.50 K-D ratio, while Cameron “Cammy” McKilligan of Great Britain registered 47 kills and a plus-1.07 ratio for the Rokkr.

OpTic Texas (1-0) and the Los Angeles Guerrillas (0-1) went five maps before OpTic claimed the match. OpTic began with a 250-127 win on Breenbergh Hotel Hardpoint, but the Guerrillas bounced back with wins on Mercado Las Almas Search & Destroy (6-4) and El Asilo Control (3-2).

Texas regrouped with a 250-226 win on Al Bagra Fortress Hardpoint and clinched with a 6-1 victory on El Asilo Search & Destroy. Cuyler “Huke” Garland of the U.S. finished with 87 kills and a plus-1.21 K-D ratio for the winners, while Kaden “Exceed” Stockdale had 91 kills and a plus-1.20 ratio for the Guerrillas’ all-U.S. lineup.
