Bona and Campbell lead No. 7 UCLA’s storm to defeat Utah

Bona and Campbell led the Bruins in their dominant victory.

LOS ANGELES — After a week of thunder and rain in Los Angeles, the No. 7 UCLA Bruins resembled the weather. Adem Bona was the thunder, and Tyger Campbell was the rain.

Early against the Utes, they had scored only four points in the game’s first six minutes and were missing the shots they usually made. Then, Bona converted on a layup and slammed in a thunderous alley-oop dunk.

Eight-to-four, Bruins.

Campbell rained in three three-pointers to build on their lead. Then the Bruins were rolling, like usual.

They took a nine-point lead into halftime and only improved in the second half before defeating the Utah Utes 68-49. Bona and Campbell turned the Bruins’ slug into dominance.

Bona dominated under the basket taking advantage of how the Utes missed their center Branden Carlson due to illness. He exhibited high-level footwork to score inside the paint. Slams marked his night as he dunked the ball three times.

“[Bona] has come a long way from his first games here at UCLA,” Jaime Jaquez said. “He is flourishing right now… I’m definitely proud of how far he’s come and all the hard work he’s put in.”

He finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, one block, and one steal.

Campbell excelled from beyond the arc but also spread the ball to ignite the Bruins’ offense. He dished out seven assists and scored 17 points, nine of which came from beyond the arc.

Dylan Andrews impressed in the nine minutes he played. He closed the game with a dunk which thrilled the home crowd.

Andrews scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds.

Jaylen Clark also chipped in with 11 points and three steals. Jaquez followed with eight points, 12 rebounds, and six assists.

Amari Bailey missed his fourth consecutive game because of a foot injury.

The win is the Bruins’ 12th consecutive victory. They are also undefeated (6-0) in PAC-12 conference games. Next, the Bruins will play the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday, where they will have a chance to add to a winning streak that began in November.
