Angels call up prospect Logan O’Hoppe, recall 3B Anthony Rendon

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Angels promoted top catching prospect Logan O’Hoppe and recalled third baseman Anthony Rendon from the 60-day injured list on Wednesday.

Rendon immediately began serving a five-game suspension for his role in a melee with the Seattle Mariners on June 26.

O’Hoppe started on Wednesday night against the visiting Oakland Athletics, batting eighth. He went 1-for-3 with a third-inning single during Los Angeles’ 4-1 victory.

The Angels also designated outfielder Magneuris Sierra and infielder Mike Ford for assignment.

The Angels acquired O’Hoppe, 22, at the trade deadline as part of the deal that sent outfielder Brandon Marsh to the Philadelphia Phillies.

O’Hoppe spent 2022 with the Double-A affiliates of both the Angels and Phillies. He hit .283 in 104 games with 26 home runs, 78 RBIs, 70 walks and 74 strikeouts. MLB.com ranks him as the No. 65 overall prospect and top in the Angels farm system.

The Angels announced on June 17 that Rendon would undergo season-ending surgery on his right wrist. But he apparently healed quickly and was taking batting practice earlier this week before being reinstated.

Interim manager Phil Nevin told reporters before Wednesday’s game that Rendon will be available to play in a season-ending series with the Athletics, after he serves his suspension.

Rendon, 32, is batting .228 with a .383 slugging percentage in 45 games this season. He has five homers and 24 RBIs.

Rendon has played in just 155 games during the first three seasons of a seven-year, $245 million contract he signed as a free agent prior to the 2020 season.

Sierra, 26, appeared in 45 games with the Angels, batting .165 with no homers and five RBIs. Three of his hits were triples, and he stole six bases in seven attempts.

Ford, 30, batted .231 with three homers and five RBIs in 28 games with the Angels. He also has played for the San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners and Atlanta Braves this season, batting .206 overall with three homers and 10 RBIs in 50 games.
