Max Muncy tallied his first long ball of spring training in the Dodgers’ 11-4 win over the Guardians.

Muncy has done well at the plate this spring, slashing .292/.393/.500 for an .893 OPS. He has doubled twice and driven in three runs in 10 games thus far.

It was a tough first half of 2022 for Muncy. Up until the All-Star break, the infielder batted just .164 and hit nine home runs in 73 games. Muncy improved dramatically from August until the end of the year, looking like himself again by posting an .858 OPS and homering 12 times in 58 games.

Muncy will need to produce closer to that second half self for the Dodgers this year. After losing Trea Turner and Justin Turner in the offseason, much of the gap left offensively will fall on Muncy to fill. His good numbers this spring indicate he is prepared to succeed in that role.

Infield prospect Eddys Leonard joined Muncy with his first home run of the spring. After a down 2022 in High-A, Leonard has mashed to a 1.026 OPS so far in the spring as he looks to get back on track.

Michael Grove got hit around a bit as the starter, allowing five hits and three earned runs to cross in his 2 2/3 innings on the hill. He did strike out three, but his spring ERA was raised to 4.15 through four starts.

Lastly, top pitching prospect Gavin Stone picked up the win and made his third appearance of the spring. He didn’t allow a run, keeping his spring ERA at 0.00, and struck out three in his 1 2/3 innings of work.

Roster cuts

Following the game, the Dodgers sent nine players to minor league camp. Top prospects Diego Cartaya, Bobby Miller, Michael Busch and Andy Pages were among the group that was sent down.

Notably, James Outman and Gavin Stone were left off the list and will remain in major league camp, at least for the time being.

Jorbit Vivas, Eddys Leonard, Jonny DeLuca, Matt Andriese and Jahmai Jones were the other players sent to minor league camp.

Yamamoto retires

Right hander Jordan Yamamoto, 26, announced his retirement this morning. After nine professional seasons between the Brewers, Marlins and Mets organizations, Yamamoto signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers in January. He will hang up his spikes with 21 career games pitched across three major league seasons.
