Chargers WR Keenan Allen frustrated by latest hamstring setback

The five-time Pro Bowler said that he was doing some workouts during the bye week when he felt something. "It just hasn't responded."

The Chargers hoped the bye week would give players like receiver Keenan Allen a chance to rest his hamstring injury and be ready to return. Unfortunately, he has hit a snag in his recovery yet again.

Allen missed Wednesday’s practice with the same hamstring injury that hasn’t allowed him to play but two games this season.

“I don’t think it was a restrain or anything,” Allen said. “It is just some more scar tissue that is trying to break off, and whenever it is ready to heal, just got to let it do its own thing.”

He returned during the week seven matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, making two catches and only playing in the first half. It was speculated that he may have re-aggravated the hamstring.

“Nothing happened in the game,” Allen said. “Taking my time with it and just going through it how we planned it and just through the bye week, kind of hit it again.”

The five-time Pro Bowler said that he was doing some workouts during the bye week and that when he was running, he felt something.

“It just hasn’t responded the way we had hoped, and that’s the truth,” Chargers coach Brandon Staley said. “We’re just trying to get him back. It’s in a tricky area. We just want to make sure that when he goes out there, he has full confidence to play his game.”

Allen called the setback “very frustrating,” as he has been the gold standard the last five seasons of playing almost every game. The last time the wide receiver missed this much time was in 2016 when he tore his ACL during week one of the season.

The Chargers face the Atlanta Falcons this weekend, and the team was hoping to have him ready to go, but now there is a cloud of uncertainty about when he will return.

“Not at this point,” he said. “Keep working through it and hope it starts getting better.”

When he returns, Allen wants to ensure it is a full go.

“I definitely don’t want to do the halfway thing again,” said Allen, who has caught six passes for 77 yards in two games this season. “Just want to come back 100 percent and not worried about it.”

The offense is missing receiver Mike Williams due to an ankle injury he suffered against Seattle, and they keep Allen on the injury list. They get receiver Joshua Palmer and tight end Donald Parham Jr. off concussion protocol. Staley did say they could be question marks heading into Sunday.

So, that means quarterback Justin Herbert will have Michael Bandy, Jason Moore, and DeAndre Carter as healthy pass catchers.

“We’ll be confident with whoever goes out there that is dressed up,” Staley said. “We have full confidence in our group. We know all of the guys on our team. We’re going to have to put a good gameplan [together] with the guys who are out there.”
