FINAL: San Diego State 83 - Fresno State 60
SAN DIEGO — With the final quarter of the Mountain West season in view, the San Diego State Aztecs close out their regular season series against Fresno State at 8 p.m. on Tuesday night at Viejas Arena.
The Aztecs (17-6, 10-4 Mountain West Conference) have won two straight and six of their last seven games, completing a season series sweep against the Boise State Broncos with a 64-47 win on Saturday night. Nick Boyd's career-high was bolstered by Wayne McKinney III passing the 1,000 point mark for his career while Magoon Gwath earned his third Freshman of the Week honor and notched six blocks to set a program freshman single game record move into No. 8 on the program's single season list with 62. The 47 points by the Broncos were their fewest in a conference game since joining the Mountain West in 2011-12.
McKinney has scored in double-figures six times this season for SDSU after reaching the mark 40 times with University of San Diego, but more has come out about his leadership role during halftime of the Scarlet and Black's 69-66 comeback win at San Jose State on Feb. 11. The San Diego Union Tribune reported that during an impromptu player's only meeting, McKinney spoke with "passion" and "had a big voice" that everybody listened to and "everybody was dialed in." The Aztecs are 5-1 when McKinney pours in 10 or more points, and the 12 points he had in the Central Valley
Fresno State (5-21, 1-14) is winless on the road in conference play, with their lone away win for the campaign coming at Long Beach State back on Nov. 23, 2024 and in the six losses away from SaveMart Center since the turn of 2025, five have been by 20-plus points. Since deploying a zone defense for the first time against Nevada on Jan. 11 the Bulldogs have held opponents below 70 points in regulation for six of 10 games. While their offense has generated the 18th-most possessions per 40 minutes (71.8) in the conference, they rank below 340th of the 364 NCAA DI teams in field goal percentage, field goal percentage defense, points allowed per game, rebounding percentage and point differential.
San Diego State is looking to extend their winning streak to 12 games against the opponent the Scarlet and Black have faced more than any other in program history, with this being the 130th meeting. Should Fresno State lose tonight it would set a program record for losses in a season — this year's squad became the quickest of seven 20-loss teams to reach that mark for the Bulldogs in their 102-year history.
