Ducks take advantage of struggling Oilers, pick up points in Wild Card hunt
It was a big day for the Anaheim Ducks as they used a strong performance to secure a 6-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night at Rogers Place.
Despite a quiet first ten minutes, Anaheim still managed to deliver the bulk of their damage in the opening period. Following an Edmonton goal from Leon Draisaitl that got things started on the night, the Ducks' response featured four unanswered goals of their own to cap off the frame.
"Right off the first hop, I thought we were flying," said Ducks' youngster Cutter Gauthier, who picked up all three of his assists in the game during the team's first-period onslaught. "We had a couple of good chances to start, and then [Mason McTavish] was able to bury one from a tough angle...after that, it just kept rolling."
In the process, the 21-year-old became just the third rookie in Ducks' history to record three assists in a single period.
Following an unnasisted score from Leo Carlsson to start the scoring for Anaheim, Gautheir assisted on a pair of scores from McTavish as well as one from Sam Colangelo. It was the 14th goal of the season for Carlsson, while McTavish picked up his 15th and 16th, and Colangelo found just his second.

The scoring only continued in the second as Ryan Strome got in on the action with his tenth of the year. The score came on an impressive feed from defenseman Jackson LaCombe, who picked up his third assist of the night to reach 22 total.
LaCombe is third on the team in assists behind just Strome and Troy Terry, who leads all with 28. The 24-year-old also managed to extend his point streak to six games as he continues to display his efficiency through 53 games thus far.
Anaheim goalie Lukas Dostal did an excellent job all night for the Ducks as he kept Edmonton out of the net while his squad did their job on the other side of the ice. Dostal saved 32 of 34 shots overall as he improved to 17-14-5 on the season with his second consecutive victory.
Alex Killorn would deliver the final goal of the night for Anaheim early in the third as he cashed in on a perfect breakaway opportunity, courtesy of a perfect feed from Trevor Zegras.

It was the 12th of the year for Killorn, who boosted the Ducks to just their third game this season with six goals.
Before the game's end, Connor McDavid did manage to add on one final goal for the Oilers as he took advantage of an Edmonton power play for his 23rd of the season. McDavid, along with the squad's leading scorer in Draisaitl, were the only ones to find the net for Edmonton as they lost their sixth of the last seven.
Anaheim managed to make progress standings-wise in the Wild Card race, as they picked up a pair of points. None of the three clubs standing in front of them (Utah, St. Louis, Vancouver) played on Tuesday, allowing them to make up a bit of ground.
The Ducks, now 27-26-7, will wrap up their quick two-game Canadien road trip on Wednesay evening as they visit the Vancouver Canucks. Currently just four points ahead of Anaheim, the game will have big implications on the Wild Card race.
Vancouver is riding a two-game losing streak, with the first of the two losses coming at the hands of Anaheim back at the Honda Center on February 27. The season series stands at 1-1 so far.
Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PT.
