Padres starting pitcher Nick Pivetta pitches during the first inning of Saturday’s loss to the Cubs

CHICAGO – Matthew Boyd tossed six scoreless innings and Carson Kelly drove in four runs on Saturday afternoon to lift the Chicago Cubs to a 7-1 victory over the San Diego Padres.

Cubs veteran left-hander only allowed five hits in his first career start at Wrigley Field. Boyd has yet to give up a run in his eleven innings pitched this season.

Nick Pivetta looked like a completely different pitcher from his last game against the Atlanta Braves. He allowed three runs and six hits in three innings. The right-hander struck out four and walked three. In 16 innings across two games in Chicago, Padres pitchers have surrendered 15 walks.

Kelly hit an RBI single off Pivetta in the second, then proceeded to hit a three-run homer in the sixth, which propelled Chicago to a 7-0 lead.

Offensively, the Padres just never found their rhythm. Fernando Tatis Jr.’s two-out RBI single in the seventh was the only run the Padres scored. San Diego has only scored one run in both losses to the Cubs in the series.

The Padres will try to avoid a sweep on Sunday, sending left-hander Kyle Hart to the rubber to take on Cubs right-hander Ben Brown.
