LAS VEGAS -- Pavel Dorofeyev scored a goal and an assist. Still, it wasn’t enough to overcome a poor second period in a Vegas Golden Knights’ 3-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers at T-Mobile Arena on Tuesday.
Nicolas Roy also scored, while Adin Hill made 17 saves for the Golden Knights (45-21-8), who saw their six-game winning streak come to an end.
It wasn’t all bad, however, for the Golden Knights. They clinched their seventh appearance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in eight seasons, thanks to the Utah Hockey Club’s 3-1 victory against the Calgary Flames.
“It says a lot from top to bottom,” Roy said. “Everybody, starting with [team owner] Bill [Foley]. Obviously, the coaching and all the staff we got here, we got the best. We got the best fans. It’s a really good setup. So, it's really fun to be part of it.”
How The Goals Were Scored
Roy opened the game’s scoring with a shot on the rush at 4:34 of the first period following a Dorofeyev defensive play in the neutral zone.
Then the wheels came off in the second period, where the Golden Knights allowed three goals.
The first goal came 19 seconds into the period when Jake Walman scored his first goal as an Oiler by beating Hill at his far post. NHL leading goal scorer Leon Draisaitl made it 2-1 at 16:03 by blasting a one-timer from the left circle while on the 5-on-3 advantage.
The third goal was a little more controversial. Victor Arvidsson scored at 18:23 by jamming the puck into the net from underneath Hill. The Golden Knights challenged for goalie interference, but video review deemed it a good goal officially making it 3-1.
Dorofeyev cut the lead to 3-2 at 2:35 of the third period with a point shot through traffic.
“We didn't play for 20 minutes in the second,” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “If we could have just had a B game, right? We talked about this a lot. There's A and B games. I liked our start. First period was good. We got ourselves in some penalty trouble. And you have to weather the storm against good teams. One goal can't become two or three.
“Today, we didn't get out of the second period well enough.”
