LAS VEGAS – It'll be nail-biting time on The Mesa come Selection Sunday, as the San Diego State Aztecs went cold down the stretch in a 62-52 quarterfinal loss to the Boise State Broncos on Thursday afternoon at the Thomas & Mack Center.
The Aztecs had only one field goal after Nick Boyd's 3-pointer with 13:14 remaining, a driving bucket by the senior guard at the 9:11 mark. SDSU missed their final nine shots from the field, shooting 5 of 20 from the field in the second half.
Boise State attempted a season-high 40 3-pointers, making 11 but also snagging 13 offensive rebounds and turning them into an 18-3 advantage in second chance scores. Alvaro Cardenas earned his first career win over SDSU, scoring 16 points with four assists, while Tyson Degenhart had 14 points and seven rebounds.
It's SDSU's first quarterfinal loss since 2007 when sixth-seed Colorado State upended the Aztecs, snapping a 17-year winning streak.
