SAN DIEGO — Konnor Smith's journey through junior hockey has been one marked by transitions and development, with his recent trade to the Brampton Steelheads adding yet another chapter to his story.

After being drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the fourth round (97th overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft, Smith is continuing to make his mark as a physical and defensive-minded defenseman, now in his second season with Owen Sound.

Smith, who hails from Windsor, Ontario, grew up in a city known for producing NHL talent, including the likes of Cam Fowler, a player Smith admires greatly.

"Growing up in Windsor, I was always surrounded by hockey," Smith said. "I looked up to guys like Cam Fowler, who has done so much for the community. It’s amazing to see how he’s represented Windsor and the impact he’s had on young players like me."

Smith began his OHL career with the Peterborough Petes, where he had the opportunity to play alongside Mason McTavish. His development took a significant turn when he was traded midseason to the Owen Sound Attack, where he finished out the year.

"I started the season with Peterborough, and I had the chance to play with Mason McTavish, which was an awesome experience," Smith reflected. "After the trade, I focused on adjusting to the new team and the system they had, and it was a good experience overall."

Smith’s time with Owen Sound included a late-season call-up to the San Diego Gulls, where he made an immediate impact by scoring a goal in his very first AHL game.

"It was an amazing experience to score in my first AHL game," Smith shared. "It gave me a huge confidence boost, especially since that’s not really my primary role — I’m known more for my physicality."

The 2023-24 season has seen Smith continue to develop in the OHL. While the start to his season in Owen Sound was strong, Smith was once again traded midseason, this time to the Brampton Steelheads. Currently, Smith has recorded 1 point in 14 games with Brampton. "It’s been a bit of an adjustment," Smith explained. "The transition is never easy, but I’ve embraced the changes and I’m focused on improving my game."

One of the defining aspects of Smith’s playing style is his physicality, a trait that the Ducks saw in him when they drafted him.

"Growing up, I was always a bigger kid, and I had to learn to use that to my advantage," Smith said. "When I was younger, I wasn’t always the ‘mean guy’ on the ice, but my dad taught me to find that switch. Now, when I put on my helmet, I completely change. I embrace the physical side of the game."

Smith’s hard-hitting style is complemented by his boxing background, which has helped him both mentally and physically. "I’ve worked with a level 5 boxing coach in Canada, and it’s been invaluable in helping me build my confidence and physicality," Smith explained. "Boxing has taught me how to stay focused, both in and out of the rink."

When asked about his NHL debut with the San Diego Gulls, Smith’s excitement was palpable.

"It was incredible to be part of that team and play at that level," Smith said.

The Ducks’ jerseys also left an impression on Smith, particularly the team's new designs.

"I love the new Ducks jerseys, especially the all-orange look. The Anniversary jersey last year is really cool as well," Smith shared.

As Smith continues his journey in the OHL with the Brampton Steelheads, he is focusing on improving all aspects of his game, particularly his defensive skills and physical play. "I’m working on becoming a more well-rounded player, but I know that physicality is a key part of my game," Smith said.

Looking forward to the future, Smith remains focused on making it to the NHL.

"I know it’s a process, but my goal is to keep working hard every day, continue developing, and hopefully make the jump to the NHL one day."

Smith’s progress and growth are evident, and with his size, physicality, and work ethic, he is certainly a player to watch as he continues to develop within the Ducks organization.
