ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Right-hander Davis Daniel was scratched from his scheduled start with Triple-A Salt Lake Wednesday and Davis will start for the Angels in their series opener Thursday against the Detroit Tigers, according to manager Ron Washington.
The move comes after left-hander Patrick Sandoval announced he will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery because of a torn UCL he suffered earlier this month.
“He’s been throwing the ball well," Washington said. "He’s a live body and all we want him to do is come up here and not have any injuries."
Daniel has a 5-4 record and a 5.33 ERA in 76 innings in Salt Lake and was last recalled in May.
Rendon makes progress
Anthony Rendon was getting field work prior to the game with Washington, who said he is pleased with Rendon’s progress but he did not provide a timetable for a return.
”He’s been working hard on his defense, yesterday he took BP, so he’s coming,” Washington said. “Right now he’s coming off a hamstring (injury), so when you’re running and you’re coming off a hamstring (injury) it’s on your mind.”

Sano at third for Angels
Miguel Sano was activated from the injured list Tuesday, after missing 50 games because of knee inflation and entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning against the Oakland A’s.
Sano started Wednesday’s game at third base and batted cleanup, returning to his role filling in at third as well as first base when needed. Luis Rengifo will start at second base Wednesday.
First pitch against the A’s is scheduled for 1:07 p.m, as the Angels search for just their fourth series sweep of the season.
