Rahm aims to make Torrey Pines his own iconic course

SAN DIEGO — Most storied golfers have courses where they dominate. Tiger Woods won eight times at three different courses, Jack Nicklaus won six times at Augusta National Golf Club, and Sam Snead won six times at Bayshore Country Club, along with multiple others

Jon Rahm has yet to reach those heights but is hoping to do so by continuing his success at Torrey Pines Golf Course. He aims to make it his own iconic course.

“All of the great players have been able to make a tournament their own,” he said. “I am hoping to make [Torrey Pines] one of those places where year after year I show up.”

Rahm has won there twice, once in 2017 for his first PGA Tour victory and once in 2021, and will seek his third trophy this year when the Farmers Insurance Open begins on Thursday.

He enters the event as the No. 3 ranked golfer on the PGA TOUR Tour World Rankings and is first overall in the FedExCup Season Standings. He has finished at the top of the leaderboard the past two weekends (in the Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express), and is looking to make it three in a row this week.

When my wife and I met, for both of us, our favorite city in the world was San Diego… I think that started [our] connection… We get here [Torrey Pines], and we are in our happy place.

However, the field for the Farmers Insurance Open is filled with top-ranked players such as Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, and Will Zalatoris. Luke List, who won the tournament last year, will also compete to defend his trophy.

In order to face off against such challenging competition, Rahm often spends his ‘off days’ in the gym working out as preparation.

“Even though it might be a day off, you gotta keep going and pushing because sometimes those days you do not want to do it, you end up learning something about yourself,” he said.

Rahm is a 26-year-old golfer who was born in Barrika, Spain. His early triumphs on the course allowed him to become the No. 1 ranked World Amateur Golfer before ever becoming a professional. Now on the PGA Tour, he has partnered with multiple companies such as Callaway, Mercedes-Benz, Rolex, and more. On Wednesday, at Torrey Pines Golf Course, he added another company to this list.

Rahm is becoming a Player Ambassador for Maestro Dobel Tequila, which is already the Official Tequila of the PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions.

Maestro Dobel Tequila is a Mexican brand of blended tequila, and its founder is Juan Domingo Beckmann. The company hopes to “accelerate [its] presence” in a competitive tequila industry through the partnership with Rahm.

He enjoys Maestro Dobel Tequila’s tequila and hopes to increase the company’s recognition in the United States and worldwide.

“What made this partnership special is that [he] obviously loves tequila which was key for us to do something that was true for the partnership,” Beckmann said.

Occasionally, Rahm consumes their tequila to celebrate his victories on Sundays. He believes the drink’s uniqueness is similar to his swing.

“In the golf game, there is not one way of [succeeding],” he said. “You have to make it your own. Much like [Beckmann] did, I have to [do] what I can to play it my own way.”

Rahm is looking to grow Maestro Dobel Tequila this week while etching his own name in the Torrey Pines’ history books. The course’s location in San Diego, California has a very special place in Rahm’s heart because this is where he proposed and then married his wife Kelley.

“When my wife and I met, for both of us, our favorite city in the world was San Diego… I think that started [our] connection… We get here, and we are in our happy place,” Rahm said.

Rahm will tee off on Thursday at 10:40 AM PST in pursuit of making Torrey Pines the golf course he is forever remembered by. He will be paired with Tony Finau and Justin Thomas.
