ANAHEIM, Calif. — Angels manager Phil Nevin said the Angels are still evaluating Shohei Ohtani’s injury and did not provide a timetable for his return.

“He really wants to play right now, this is something he’s upset by,” Nevin said. “He wants to be out there, I know he does.”

Ohtani’s injury occurred during batting practice prior to the Angels’ loss to the Baltimore Orioles Monday night, just after his agent, Nez Balelo told the press his client would attempt to finish this season.

Although Nevin decided to take Ohtani out of the lineup, he does want to get back on the field.

“He feels a lot better today, he mentioned wanting to play but I’m not going to let him,” Nevin said. “You’ve got to be sure, that’s why we’re diving into some tests.”

Nevin did not reveal whether or not Ohtani will go on the IL or whether the team would make any other roster moves.

Ohtani was not in the Angels lineup Tuesday and coincidentally was not present during the Angels team photo prior to the game against Baltimore. The Angels opted to use a placeholder wearing Ohtani’s No. 17 in the photo.

The identity of who was wearing the jersey was not revealed, but the Angels will likely Photoshop Ohtani into the Team Photo this year.
