Padres star 3B Manny Machado (hand) placed on IL

San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado was placed on the 10-day injured list due to his hand injury, manager Bob Melvin told reporters prior to Friday’s home game against the Boston Red Sox.

The Padres said the move is retroactive to Tuesday.

Machado sustained a small fracture in his left hand after being struck by a pitch from Kansas City Royals right-hander Brad Keller during Monday’s game. Machado initially remained in the contest before later leaving.

He missed games on Tuesday and Wednesday against the Royals. The Padres were off Thursday.

Initial X-rays didn’t display a fracture. But a CT scan and MRI exam that Machado underwent on Tuesday both detected a fractured metacarpal.

The IL stint is the first for Machado since 2014 when he played for the Baltimore Orioles.

Machado, 30, is off to a slow start this season, batting .231 with seven doubles, five home runs and 19 RBIs in 40 games. The six-time All-Star has a .282 on-base percentage and a .372 slugging percentage.

Brandon Dixon was recalled from Triple-A El Paso as the corresponding move. Dixon is in Friday’s lineup, playing first base and batting seventh. Jake Cronenworth is at second base and Ha-Seong Kim is at third.

Dixon was 2-for-12 with eight strikeouts in five games with the Padres earlier this season. At El Paso, he was batting .273 with seven homers and 15 RBIs in 26 games.
