NHL roundup: Canucks rally, edge Hurricanes in shootout

James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports

Elias Pettersson converted on the last attempt of a shootout to allow the Vancouver Canucks to salvage the last game of a road trip with a 4-3 victory against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday at Raleigh, N.C.

The Canucks rallied from a two-goal hole. A goal by ex-Carolina defenseman Ethan Bear with 2:08 to play in the second period put the Canucks on the board. J.T. Miller and Brock Boeser notched third-period goals, with Boeser’s coming with just 17 seconds left to play.

Paul Stastny and Jordan Martinook scored in the first period and Sebastian Aho had a third-period goal for the Hurricanes. Carolina goalie Pyotr Kochetkov made 29 saves. The rookie is 0-3-1 following a Dec. 20 victory against the New Jersey Devils.

The Canucks went 1-4-0 on a five-game road trip. Goalie Collin Delia stopped 29 shots. Andrei Kuzmenko also converted in the shootout for Vancouver.

Canadiens 2, Rangers 1

Cole Caufield scored the tiebreaking goal with 11:04 remaining in regulation and Sam Montembeault made 38 saves as Montreal snapped a seven-game road losing streak with a victory over New York.

With the game tied at 1-1, New York defenseman K’Andre Miller lost control of the puck behind his own net just before the midway portion of the third period. Montreal’s Nick Suzuki took possession and sent it in front of the net for a wide-open Caufield to bury for his 26th goal.

Montembeault, meanwhile, was stellar while getting the call for a second straight day after stopping 36 shots during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to the New York Islanders. He was particularly stout late in the third, coming up with a host of key saves as New York made its final push. Artemi Panarin had a goal and Igor Shesterkin made 29 saves for the Rangers, who suffered their first regulation loss of the new year to end a 5-0-2 stretch.

Jets 2, Coyotes 1

Pierre-Luc Dubois and Blake Wheeler scored in the second period as Winnipeg defeated visiting Arizona.

It was Arizona’s ninth straight loss, while the Jets won for the eighth time in their last nine games. Connor Hellebuyck made 20 saves for the victory. Clayton Keller scored for the Coyotes. Karel Vejmelka, in net for Arizona, made 22 stops.

The Jets scored the eventual game-winner with 3:15 left in the middle frame when Wheeler found the back of the net after connecting with linemates Mark Scheifele and Cole Perfetti off the rush.
