Lakers blow out Spurs behind another strong Anthony Davis game

The Los Angeles Lakers have won three in a row.

Anthony Davis was in the middle of it all once again as the Lakers crushed the San Antonio Spurs, 123-92. Yes, the Lakers won in a blowout and they were comfortably in front pretty much from the jump.

There’s not much to break down when one team wins by 30-plus. It didn’t help that Jakob Poeltl, the Spurs’ rim protector, missed the game. Gregg Popovich was also a late scratch due to an illness. And the Spurs also played the night before against the Clippers so they’re a bit fatigued. Brett Brown, former Sixers coach and forever Popovich disciple, took care of things as head coach.

But no matter what, Anthony Davis just had his way (if anything, Davis has had his way the last three games). Davis scored 18 points in the first quarter and the Lakers really never looked back after that. Lakers led by 14 after one and the Spurs were never able to threaten.

And to make sure the Spurs couldn’t even think about making it a game, the Lakers had a rare excellent third quarter. L.A. started the period on a 15-1 run and, once again, Davis was in the mix, scoring 8 points in that span.

Again, not much to break down, but what I want to say is how confident and comfortable the Lakers looked. I don’t think we’ve seen them this seamless like this game. Davis took command (30 points, 18 rebounds, three steals). Austin Reaves continued to be excellent (21 points). We didn’t get a huge game from Lonnie Walker IV (14 points) but I’m sure that shellacking of the Spurs felt good for him. Russell Westbrook really got the team involved (10 points, 10 assists). Both Thomas Bryant (15 points, 9 boards) and Dennis Schröder (13 points) were much better in their second game back. Even Kendrick Nunn played well (13 points).

The Lakers had extended garbage time and was able to get reps in for returning players as well as struggling players. It was really nice for the Lakers to have a win like this. No matter who they play, winning like this gives the players and team a huge confidence boost.

They seem to be figuring this out, too. Both the team and Anthony Davis finally found the formula that works for them. I don’t know why it took them about a month into the season but giving the rock to Anthony Davis often (especially in the second half) seems to work quite well. No one can argue the results: he’s had 30 or more points and 15 or more rebounds in the last three games. And they’re all victories.

It also even buys time for LeBron James to heal all his nagging injuries. We can also debate that LeBron was part of the problem by ruining the flow of the game with his bad decision-making. But obviously, he’s smart enough to realize what’s working. In fact, he’s probably waited for this day where Davis becomes a dominant force and a true #1 option.

On the Spurs’ side, there’s not much to say. Davis was just better than whatever the Spurs threw at him. Devin Vassell led the team with 17 points. Keldon Johnson struggled all game, only making one out of 10 three-pointers (12 points). Jeremy Sochan, who is quite the curiosity, did take advantage of some careless Laker plays at garbage time; he ended with three steals.

In the end, this was all Anthony Davis and the Lakers. They do get a huge test as they go to Phoenix and take on the Suns on Tuesday. And then the Lakers and Spurs go at it twice more at the end of this week.

The Lakers are 5-10 and on a three-game winning streak. It’s easy to look at the schedule and think that the Lakers can make up a ton of ground.

But for now, it’s still one game at a time.
