Julie Ertz signs with Angel City FC

ACFC bolsters their midfield by adding the USWNT star.

LOS ANGELES — Midfielder Julie Ertz has signed with Angel City FC.

The 31-year-old midfielder was in contact with multiple professional teams but ultimately chose to sign with ACFC. The deal was announced by the club on Monday.

Ertz has National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) experience as she played for the Chicago Red Stars from 2014 to 2021. She appeared in 101 games for the club and scored six goals.

More recently, Ertz played for the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) in two friendlies against the Republic of Ireland. In total, she has made 118 appearances for the national team, including some in the 2015 and 2019 World Cups, which they won.

Before the season, ACFC head coach Freya Coombe said the team would be willing to make deals to be more competitive. Ertz’s entry comes after the club signed forward Scarlett Camberos last week.

“We’re always looking to be the most competitive team that we can be,” Coombe said, “If opportunities arise to make us more competitive, we will always take them.”

Ertz is expected to make her first appearance as early as against ACFC rivals, the San Diego Wave, on Sunday.
