Dodgers take series opener, 6-2, in San Francisco, behind Lynn and Martinez

John Hefti-USA TODAY Sports
Martinez eclipses 1,000 career RBI and Lance Lynn works through tough first inning to win in San Francisco.

SAN FRANCISCO — After an up and down series against the Rockies, the Dodgers took on their rival San Francisco Giants in the final regular season series of 2023. Lance Lyn overcame a tough first inning to complete six and J.D. Martinez continued his offensive rampage in a win.

Lance Lynn has been pretty good as of late, but his tenure with the Dodgers has been rocky as a whole. In this one, it seemed we were headed for one of those “iffy” starts with a first inning that consisted of two walks, a hit, and two runs allowed. After getting through that, he was excellent, only giving up two walks, a lone hit and zero runs for the remainder of his final five innings. Oh and ho hum, the bullpen came in and dominated right after him per usual…

Although there were only six hits in total from the Dodgers, the offense took advantage of having runners on and cashed them in. Freddie Freeman had half of the total hits with three to go along with three runs scored, but the power came from J.D. Martinez. He eclipsed the 100 RBI mark and hit a three run home run to put the game out of reach for good and continue his insane stretch of offense.

The Dodgers are now 99-61 and have 2 games remaining in the regular season.

Here are my three takeaways:

Tired of Dodger Records Yet?

I certainly am not. Remember how I was explaining that the Dodgers had three hitters with 100 RBI? Now, J.D. Martinez joined that group and did so by giving him his own milestone as well. After Martinez’s three-run blast late, he eclipsed 1,000 RBI in his career and at the same time, gave the Dodgers their first season with four players hitting the 100 RBI mark. What a player and what an offense.

Shelby Miller Quietly Elite

Most people remember Shelby Miller for his involvement in the Dansby Swanson trade way back in the 2010’s, but it is 2023 and he has been excellent in his role for the Dodgers. This month, Miller has pitched in 11 games and has struck out 11, walking 1 and allowing zero runs. This guy was a super under the radar move in the offseason and to see him thrive as one of the best arms in the bullpen, is a great sight. He will be a high leverage guy in the postseason and deservingly so.

Miguel Rojas Hurts Hand

I don’t feel directly responsible for Rojas getting hit on the hand and taken out of the game, but I really should’ve knocked on wood in my last piece. After an excellent September, Rojas was hit on the hand with a fastball late in the game on Friday night. He was immediately taken out and seemed visibly frustrated, but thankfully Dave Roberts mentioned postgame that the X-Rays were negative. The Dodgers need his leadership and defense in the lineup, and with his offense coming around, he will be crucial in a few weeks.

The Dodgers will trot out Clayton Kershaw in his final tune up before the playoffs to face Tristan Beck for the Giants. First pitch is set for 6:05 PM PST Saturday.
