The Los Angeles Dodgers placed right-hander Tony Gonsolin on the 15-day injured list Monday with a right forearm strain.
Fellow right-hander Michael Grove was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to replace Gonsolin as the starting pitcher Monday night against the host Miami Marlins.
The Dodgers are not scheduling an MRI for the injury, with Gonsolin telling reporters before Monday’s game that he is merely experiencing tightness. He also felt tightness in the area earlier this season and did not miss a start.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts suggested his starter will be back on the mound when his IL stint is finished. The nature of the injury is a concern since the Los Angeles pitching staff lost ace Walker Buehler to a forearm injury this season. The right-hander already has undergone Tommy John surgery.
Gonsolin, 28, made his first All-Star team this season and is among the front-runners for the National League Cy Young Award with a 16-1 record and a 2.10 ERA through 23 starts.
Gonsolin’s injury designation is retroactive to Friday. He leads the NL in ERA, WHIP (0.86), batting average against (.169) and winning percentage (.941), and has 116 strikeouts through 128 1/3 innings.
Grove, 25, has no decisions and a 5.79 ERA in two games (one start) for the Dodgers. He made his MLB debut on May 15 and is facing the Marlins for the first time.
Grove is 0-4 with a 3.48 ERA in 17 games (15 starts) this season between Double-A Tulsa and Oklahoma City.
