Dodgers bounce back with doubleheader sweep over New York Mets

The Dodgers scored three runs in the 10th inning of a 5-2 victory and then capped Tuesday night with a 3-0 win for a doubleheader sweep over the New York Mets at Citi Field.

After the team's first five-game losing streak 2019, they gained a spark in the eighth inning of game one.

Game one: Dodgers 5, Mets 2

Right-hander Tyler Glasnow looked to rebound after a few shaky starts. His ERA soared over 3.00 after a bad fifth inning in his last start, but Glasnow threw seven innings, allowing two hits and striking out eight. His ERA now stands at 3.04. 

The bullpen continued their dominant play, even through the losing streak, holding the Mets to two runs while the Dodgers struck for five runs in the final three innings. Although the team went 3 for 11 with runners in scoring position, they came alive in the later innings.

Teoscar Hernandez and Gavin Lux both had singles to set up a first-and-third scenario. Chris Taylor’s squeeze to tie the game ignited the offense, allowing Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman to take the lead in extra innings. 

Betts had an RBI single that broke the 10th-inning tie and Freeman blasted a two-run home run (sixth of the season) to make it a three-run lead. 

Blake Treinen earned his first save with a clean 10th, including two strikeouts. 

Game two: Dodgers 3, Mets 0

Right-hander Gavin Stone was at the top of his game in the second game. He pitched seven innings, gave up three hits, didn’t allow a run and struck out seven. 

Stone is the 13th pitcher this season to go seven scoreless while striking out seven and walking none. He lowered his ERA to 3.16.

Glasnow and Stone look like the two best pitchers on the team, and with the emergence of Stone a solid major-league starter, we could see a true star in the making. 

The Dodgers needed only one other pitcher as Alex Vesia threw two scoreless innings, earning his second save.

Dodgers hitters scored three runs on 10 hits thanks to home runs by Will Smith (his seventh) and Miguel Vargas (first). However, they were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and left seven on base. 

While the hitters have struggled as of late, the late outburst in the first game breathed new life into the bats.  When your team is going through a funk, sometimes all you need is one good inning, at-bat, or rally to kick start things again.

The Dodgers will look to sweep the series with the Mets at 1:10 p.m. Wednesday. They send left-hander James Paxton (5-0, 3.49 ERA) to face right-hander David Peterson, who is making his first start of the season.
