Bouanga scores twice, gives LAFC first road win of season

LAFC beat St. Louis City 2-0 and rise up the Western Conference with brace from Denís Bouanga in their first road win of the season.

Forward Denís Bouanga scored two goals, helping LAFC secure their first road victory of the season Wednesday night in a 2-0 decision at St. Louis City SC.

It was his third two-goal match this season and ended St. Louis’ five-match unbeaten streak. The result lifted LAFC to third place in the MLS Western Conference and brought Bouanga to sixth place in the goal-scorer list.

With his 10th game-winning goal, Bouanga joins Carlos Vela as the only other LAFC player to score 10 or more game-winning goals. Goaltender Hugo Lloris saved seven shots, including an early penalty kick from João Klauss.

It was Lloris’ first penalty-kick block since the 2021 Euros and is his second straight shutout.

Despite a scoreless first half, luck played a significant role in sparing LAFC an early-goal deficit.

First, with Lloris’ unexpected but penalty-kick save which was followed by two efforts from Anthony Markanich, one minute later. Just ahead of the break, LAFC allowed a goal off a set piece, but the goal was voided during a video-reviewed handball.

Despite being outshot by St, Louis, 7-3, LAFC were able to pounce. In the 59th minute, Bouanga sprung through St. Louis’ defense to connect to a pass from Mateusz Bogusz and hit his shot inside the near post.

Bouanga added his second goal in second-half stoppage time when St. Louis failed to clear a ball, allowing Bouanga to sprint on a breakaway and chip it over goalie Roman Bürki.

LAFC return home at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for a U.S. Open Cup round of 16 match against Loudoun United.
