Chargers vs. Broncos preview and prediction

Chargers play their final game of the regular season against the Broncos.

Chargers (10-6) AT Broncos (4-12)

When: Sunday, 1:25 p.m.

Where: Empower Field at Mile High

TV/Radio: CBS2; 98.7 FM; 105.5 FM/94.3 FM (Spanish)

Line: Broncos by 3 points

Notable injury designations: Chargers: FB Zander Horvath (ankle) is the only player that was on the injury report, and he is questionable.

Broncos: T Calvin Anderson (ankle), WR Kendall Hinton (chest/foot), DT D.J. Jones (knee) are listed as out. OLB Jonathan Kongbo (illness), CB Damarri Mathis (concussion), TE Eric Saubert (knee), TE Eric Tomlinson (ankle), OL Billy Turner (back) are all questionable.

What is at stake? For the Chargers, they should know before the start of the game if they have secured the fifth seed. If the Ravens win and the Chargers lose then L.A. has the sixth seed, so they need the Ravens to lose to secure the fifth seed. For the Broncos if they win the game, Seattle may not be happy because they could lose their top three draft pick. Seattle owns the Broncos first rounder because of the trade for quarterback Russell Wilson.

Who’s better? The Chargers by far, but the reason why Denver is favored is because Vegas must think the Chargers will sit their players. It would be smart to do that especially because they are starting to get healthy. Now if Justin Herbert plays two or three drives it would be fine, but it doesn’t need to go further.

Matchup to watch: Joey Bosa. Bosa mentioned that last weekend against the Rams he suffered through food poisoning, so it wasn’t the best. This will be a game to watch because the Chargers will need the pass rusher to play at a high level during the playoffs. Sunday’s game could help him get into game shape.

Chargers win if: They truly decide to go all in for the fifth seed if the Ravens beat the Bengals.

Prediction: Cincinnati beats the Ravens, so the Chargers decide to not go the full game with their players. Brandon Staley rests his stars, and the Chargers drop the game with their eyes on the big prize. Broncos win 24-17.
