Chargers GM Telesco says Keenan Allen ‘isn’t going anywhere’

Chargers GM Tom Telesco says that WR Keenan Allen isn't leaving the team.

The NFL Combine is underway, so Chargers general manager Tom Telesco and head coach Brandon Staley are doing the media rounds. Currently, the Chargers are $20.39 million over the cap.

So, the question for the last two months has been whether Telesco would consider moving on from receiver Keenan Allen, who would free up $14.8 million.

“Keenan Allen isn’t going anywhere,” Telesco told Jeff Miller of the LA Times.

Allen, 31, has been a big part of the Chargers’ offense since he was drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He has over 790 catches, 9287 yards and 52 touchdowns. He was the go-to receiver for Philip Rivers and has been a big part of the growth of Justin Herbert.

“Keenan Allen, to me, he’s our Andre Reed. He’s our Charlie Joiner,” Telesco said Wednesday on Good Morning Football.

He did miss seven games last season with a hamstring injury but was able to come in and make an impact in the games he did play.

The Chargers must be under the cap on March 15th, when the new league year starts.

“It’s not tempting to me,” Telesco said after the season if it was tempting to move on from Allen. “Good players make money, and I would rather have a lot of good players on our roster than a lot of cap space.”

This team has six players making over $10 million, so it will be interesting if Telesco decides to restructure certain players’ contracts, especially with Joey Bosa, Khalil Mack, and Allen.

There is no mistake though this offense can’t afford to lose Allen. The team does have Mike Williams and Joshua Palmer, but that isn’t enough to compete. They need Allen. That is why Telesco isn’t willing to let the 11th-year receiver.

“He’s an incredible football player,” Telesco said. “We have a great quarterback, and we need weapons around him. There’s never been any thought of that.”
