ANAHEIM, CA — Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon is expected to participate in some on-field drills as soon as Wednesday, a big step in his return from a hamstring injury that has sidelined him since April 20.

The Angels were 9-12 when Rendon partially tore his hamstring against the Reds, and have gone 12-26 since then. Miguel Sano was doing a decent job trying to replace Rendon but joined Rendon on the injured list just a few weeks later.

Since then the Halos have been platooning utility players Cole Tucker and Luis Rengifo at third base until Rendon returns.

Angels Manager Ron Washington said that Rendon would take it light at first with his on-field drills and that they wouldn’t push him on certain things if he’s not ready yet.

“Well, I think we’re getting close. It could be tomorrow, but it would be light stuff,” Washington said Tuesday night. “I haven’t talked to the trainers specifically [on what he can or can’t do] yet on whether they’d let him take ground balls, but I know he’s gonna start coming out here and getting on his knees doing our drills.”

With all of the injuries the Angels have had recently (Sano, Brandon Drury and Mike Trout to name a few), the Angels could use an experienced player like Rendon, who has a knack for getting on base.

Rendon started the year 0 for 22 before finding a rhythm at the plate and going 17 for 43 with a .395 batting average in the final three weeks before getting hurt. Overall, Rendon is hitting .267 with three extra-base hits and an OPS of .632.

Rendon hasn’t played in more than 58 games a year since signing his seven-year $245 million contract with the Angels in 2019. It remains unclear when Rendon will start to take batting practice and what the target return date will be, but getting on the field is be a huge step.
