LAS VEGAS – McLaren’s Lando Norris continues to close in on the World Drivers’ Championship, securing pole position for Saturday’s Las Vegas Grand Prix with a surprising qualifying effort at a circuit that has previously given him fits. Norris holds a 24-point lead over teammate Oscar Piastri, who finished fifth in Friday’s session after going off on his final attempt.
While Norris’ triumph certainly brought an element of surprise, the first stage of qualifying brought genuine shock.
Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton was eliminated in Q1 and will start Saturday’s race from the back of the grid after being forced to abort his final lap amidst tire issues. It marks the first last place qualifying finish Hamilton’s career on pure pace, one race after four-time defending champion Max Verstappen shockingly suffered his first Q1 elimination in Sao Paulo.
Williams’ Carlos Sainz continued his good run of qualifying in Sin City by finishing P3. Sainz will start in the top three of the grid for the third consecutive Las Vegas Grand Prix after qualifying second in 2023 and 2024.
